Midterm Contemporary Photojournalism Issue Project

My narrated video for my midterm contemporary photojournalism issue project creates a visual storytelling accompanying my narrative around climate change. I utilize images of photojournalists' environmental reporting to tell a story from my perspective of climate issues. Emphasizing the impact on our environment and connecting the valuable resource of water to the results of the climate disasters and resulting issues for communities. Some of the problems highlighted in the video are the damage of oil spills in the ocean, the result of drought and rising temperatures, and how they impact the weather, resulting in more climate issues. Water is my overall theme; my thought process represents this valuable resource and how global warming impacts it. I present my contemporary photojournalist project with Photojournalism images of water in the air, on land, and in the sea. My video mentioned an inspiring quote from an article by Axelle Rescourio, The Role of Photojournalism in Environmental Reporting. He speaks to the importance of photojournalism, sharing what is happening with the world (Rescourio). The direct quote I mentioned in my video by Rescourio is, "The role of a photojournalist is to photograph and share images to the public to tell a visual story; they are professional journalists skilled at interpreting and communicating an event through a photograph." which I highlighted because I felt it is very true (Rescourio). Also, he mentioned that "Photography, more than words, can show better the impact of climate change on our planet," which I agree with, as without these photos, many people would never get the opportunity to see what is happening to the world (Rescourio). Additionally, I quoted Annie Button from her Capturing Climate Change: How Photography Can Tell the Story of a Warming World. In this article, they feature photography to support their writing. For my project, I took inspiration from her as her take on photojournalism inspired me to show the impact of the climate issue crisis for this project with some amazing images by photojournalists who skillfully highlight this tragedy affecting our planet. I included a quote from Button's article in my video: "Melting glaciers, rising seas, raging wildfires, displaced communities – the impacts of climate change are overwhelming. Thankfully, powerful images have the potential to spur action and incite positive change". I support this as I do think that when Annie Button highlighted that "Images offer compelling proof that climate change is a tangible reality unfolding before us. By visually portraying the challenges through storytelling, photography emerges as a vital instrument in combating the perilous effects of global warming" (Button). As Button did with her article and images, I also hope to highlight a few climate issues affecting our planet and the crisis happening with these global warming issues through my video images and my narrative.
